80-Years On: Celebrating VE Day at the Old Prebendal House

12/05/2025

On Thursday 8th May 2025, we celebrated the 80th annivery of VE Day at the Old Prebendal House care home with a vibrant street-party themed celebration in our newly refurbished Tithe Barn.

It was a day filled with celebration and heartfelt moments, as our residents and staff team came together to honour the bravery and sacrifices of those who served during the Second World War.

A standout moment from the day, was hearing from our incredible resident Elsie, who proudly served in the Land Army. Wearing her armband with honour, Elsie inspired us with her vivid recollections of working in an ammunition factory during the war. We were honoured to have Elsie share her stories with us, and they served as a touching reminder of the resilience and commitment of those who endured those difficult times.

As a Veteran Friendly Care Home, we take immense pride in learning from our residents and their incredible life experiences. The stories shared by our veterans enrich our lives and deepen our understanding of history in a way no textbook could.

Our VE Day celebration was not just a commemoration of the past, but also a testament to the enduring spirit and camaraderie of our community.

Val Baggott, Director of Care at the Old Prebendal House said:

“ We are incredibly proud to be a Veteran Friendly Care Home and have all learnt so much from our wonderful residents about their lives during the World War II. It was a very special and heartwarming day for everyone. We’re now looking forward to hosting more veteran-focussed events throughout the year.”

The Old Prebendal House care home was awarded the Veteran Friendly Framework accreditation in September 2024; after completing additional training and providing evidence that the facility and staff were able to adhere to the standards set out within the framework. This prestigious recognition underscores the Mariposa care commitment to creating a welcoming and supportive environment for all residents, including veterans and their families. Learn more here.

At Old Prebendal House, we cherish these special opportunities to join our local communities to celebrate national achievements, whilst also honouring our own residents and creating last memories together, which families will cherish for years to come. Thank you to everyone who joined our VE Day celebrations.
