Derwent Care Home is situated in the Derwent Valley, within the hamlet of Low Westwood immediately to the west of Hamsterley in County Durham. The River Derwent flows at the bottom of the valley, over which the care home benefits from wide ranging and stunning views.
The care home offers residential care, dementia care and respite care. The modern and spacious home, located over three floors, has forty-four purpose built and attractively decorated en-suite bedrooms. Each floor has its own dining area and lounge spaces where residents can choose to relax. Residents and their visitors also benefit from a bright and uplifting conservatory, leading onto a secure balcony, with beautiful views over the valley.
In the local village there is a regular bus service that commutes to nearby Consett, Newcastle city centre and the local Metro Centre which is one the largest shopping centres in the north east. The village also has a post office, hairdressers and barbers, church (who we work very closely), community centre and an Italian restaurant. Our GP surgery is situated along the road from our care home and they offer our resident’s a weekly ward round as part of their service.
Derwent Care Home is a registered 44 bedded home that provides care for older people with both general care and dementia needs. The home is spread over three floors that have access via stairs or a lift. All of our bedrooms benefit from en-suite facilities, and bedrooms are pleasantly furnished to ensure your comfort but we do encourage residents to bring in their personal items to make their room feel more homely. We have access to the internet and Skype which is available for all residents, family and friends. The home can provide daily and weekly newspapers and magazines delivered as requested, we also have a hairdresser who comes into our salon twice weekly and we can arrange visits from the local dentist, optician and podiatry services. Our staff are able to offer help and support with all daily tasks such as personal care, help at mealtimes, help to complete letter writing and completing forms and documentation.
Our home has a warm and relaxing feel and we welcome everyone who visits us with a smile. We value your views and opinions on the service that we provide – and welcome feedback. We encourage family and friends to come and join their loved one to have a meal at our home where our chefs Carl and Yvonne provide nutritious and well-balanced meals. If requested we can arrange for you to meet up with the chefs to discuss your choices of food. We can cater for your particular likes and dislikes offering alternative dishes to suit your tastes. We also provide vegetarian and vegan dishes if required. Hot and cold drinks are provided day and night, along with snacks on request.
" The staff are friendly and polite. The home is clean and tidy as well and grandma is much happier now she has moved into the home. "

" I love that Mum is here. As an ex Age UK CEO I understand how to review care and have nothing but praise for the home, in particular, the staff are lovely, helpful, friendly and kind. The food always looks lovely. Rooms and communal areas clean and warm. Mum's dementia has progressed but feels confident she is in the best possible place, getting the best possible care. "
Sharon S (Daughter of Resident)
" The care home is excellent in every way. Good care, plenty of activities, excellent staff, friendly home from home atmosphere. If I have to end up in a care home, this would be top of my list. I could not fund a care home that provides as much care as this home does. "
O M (Brother of Resident)
