Bringing the Comforts of Home: A Personal Packing List for New Residents

01/07/2025

Moving into a care home can be an emotional time both for the residents and their families, so it is important to make sure there are plenty of creature comforts around to remind them of home.

Putting together a packing list can make the transition much easier and will ensure that you have everything you could possibly need, so here are our top tips on the things new residents should be packing to take to their care home.

Clothing

It might seem obvious, but all residents need to take their clothing with them. Daytime clothing is the most important, so ensure that any favourite jumpers or cardigans have been included and have everything you need to make you comfortable. Ideally, you should be looking to pack enough changes of clothes to last for at least two weeks.

You should also be looking to pack clothing for the different activities that are on offer. For example, something for gardening or crafting that can get a little bit messy, or loose clothing for any exercise classes.

It is also important to make sure there are a few sets of night clothes in your suitcase, as well as a dressing gown, slippers, shoes, and underwear. Make sure you also have a coat or jacket as well as hats, scarves, and gloves for the winter.

Don’t be afraid to pack something nice too, as many care homes often have events and parties that are worth getting dressed up for.

Toiletries

Packing essential toiletries is not just important from a hygiene point of view, but the familiar products and smells can also help to create a sense of home. Make sure that all the things you would usually use have been included, such as toothbrushes, deodorant, body lotion, skincare products, and shampoo.

There will also need to be things like hairbrushes, make-up, perfume, and any styling or shaving equipment.

A little piece of home

A care home can be an unfamiliar environment which is difficult to adapt to, so bring a few personal pieces that can make your room feel a little more familiar. Most furniture is usually taken care of by the care home, but if you have a particular favourite armchair, it might be possible to bring this with you.

If not, concentrate on adding your favourite cushions or throws to go on the chairs or bed. You can also bring photographs, pictures, and ornaments to decorate your space and make it feel more personal.

Don’t forget you can also bring plenty of things to do, including books, games, hobbies, and writing materials.

Pets

Each care home will have its own rules, but some do allow you to bring pets with you. This might be a small dog, cat, or even a fish tank, but make sure you check with your care home first. If you are bringing a pet, then make sure you have all of their essentials as well as your own, including beds, food, grooming tools, and leads.

The extras

Only you know what you want to have with you in your care home, but there are many little details that people sometimes forget about. Bringing a mobile phone or tablet and charger can be a great form of entertainment and is also extremely useful for staying in touch with friends and family.

You will also need to bring essential items like mobility aids and a two-week supply of any medicines.

Having a well-thought-out packing list can ensure you have everything you want on moving day, but don’t forget you can always add to this over time if there is something you are missing.
