As part of #GladtoCare awareness week, we’re talking to Joanne, Naila and Chloe – three of our amazing care colleagues who go above and beyond for our residents. Glad to Care is national campaign designed to celebrate those who work in the care sector, and shine a spotlight on their hard work, commitment and dedication.
Joanne Gilholm works as a Care Practitioner at Briardene care home, in Westerhope, Newcastle. She started work with Mariposa as a Housekeeper, before moving into a care role.
Why did you apply to work as a carer?
I have worked for the company for 8 years now – 6 years as a Domestic Assistant (Housekeeper), then as a Care Practitioner for 2 years. I was approached by another member of the staff team, who said they thought I would make a good carer.
What advice would you give to other people thinking about applying for a care role?
It’s a very rewarding job. It can be challenging, but every day is different.
What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
Keep going the way you are.
Who has been the biggest influence in your life and why?
My Mam, I would not be where I am today if it wasn’t for her.
What are three things you can’t live without?
My family, friends, and my team mates.
Working alongside Joanne is Naila Tariq. She is also a Care Practitioner at Briardene and says she “loves being a carer.”
What advice would you give to other people thinking about applying for a care role?
I would say it’s a nice job – if anyone is thinking about it, you should do it. You feel part of a family.
What do you like most about working in a care home?
I like looking after the residents, and I enjoy working with the rest of the team.
Who has the biggest influence in your life and why?
My friend Joanne. She is really approachable, has been a good friend to me and is very professional. I love working with her.
Chloe Storey is a Senior Support Practitioner at Sovereign Court in Newcastle. She tells us why she chose to join the Mariposa Care family.
Why did you apply to work as a carer?
I wanted to make a difference in people’s lives. I have now been with Mariposa Care for four-and-a-half years, working at Sovereign Court for all this time.
What advice would you give to other people thinking about applying for a care role?
It is a rewarding job and makes you feel good at the end of the shift, going home knowing you have helped and made a difference to someone’s life. It’s so important to treat others how you would like to be treated or how you would want your family members to be treated.
What do you like most about working at Sovereign Court?
I enjoy spending time with the residents and getting to know them more and their interests. The residents here are lovely.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
Never stop learning and growing as a person.
Who has been the biggest influence in your life and why?
My parents as they have always supported me with every decision and given me advice.
What are three things you can’t live without?
Holidays, mobile phone, family.
