Introducing Gemma Rigby as Home Manager at Derwent

24/02/2023

We would like introduce a very familiar face as our new Home Manager at Derwent care home – Gemma Rigby.

Gemma has a wealth of experience in care and has been an integral part of the Derwent family since she joined us in 2014 – and we feel incredibly proud to see her progress within her career with us. We are excited to have Gemma leading our wonderful care team and look forward to seeing what positive impact she will have on the home.

With Gemma now settled into her new role, we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to get to know our new Home Manager a little more with some fun icebreaker questions. Read Gemma’s answers below.

When did you start your career in care and what prompted you to do so?

“I started working in care in 2007. At the time I had been working as a Holistic therapist, but I saw an ad for a part time support worker and the rest is history. I quickly realised I had found my vocation. Part time became full time, support worker led to other qualifications and different job roles and I’ve never looked back.”

What do you like most about the care home?

“Definitely the people who live, work and visit us. I feel very lucky to be a part of #TeamDerwent!”

Who has been the biggest influence in your life?

“It has to be two people – my Dad and my Grandma. Among many other things, my dad taught me the importance of hard work, self-belief and perseverance; and he has always been 100% supportive of everything I’ve ever done. He’s my rock and I owe him everything.

My grandma has always been there for me and from her, I learned to always care for and protect those you love, but her most profound influence on who I am right now happened when she developed Dementia. This triggered my interest in Dementia care and how best to support those living with the condition.”

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

“Make the most of every moment”

What are the key pillars for successful and positive residential care?

“Firstly, person-centred care – the residents have to be at the heart of everything we do. Also having a fabulous, committed staff team – effective communication and regular, varied activities.”

Where are you most likely to be found on your days off?

“Out and about with my family, most commonly at the coast or on countryside walks.”

What are three things you can’t live without?

“My family (including cats), music and chocolate.”

What are you most excited for in 2023?

“New challenges and my first foreign holiday in 12-years!”

Describe your management style in three words.

“Accessible, thorough and candid.”

What film/series or song could you listen to/watch on repeat?

“Phantom of the Opera – the film, live recordings, soundtrack and maybe one day live in a theatre”

Finally, is there anything else you’d like to share?

“I am absolutely delighted to have been given the opportunity to manage Derwent and I’m committed to making the service the best it can possibly be for all.”

Gemma operates an open-door policy, and welcomes visitors – if there is anything you would like to discuss please don’t hesitate to go and see her.
